Iowa High School Football Scoreboard – Semifinals

November 15, 2008

The High School Football Huddle

With West Des Moines Valley and Ankeny being the only two 4-A teams to score over 500 points this season, everyone was thinking Friday night’s state semifinal could be a shootout. By the time the game hit the second quarter, the large crowd at the UNI-Dome thought that only Ankeny brought its offense as the Hawks ran out to a 14-0 lead over the top-seed and undefeated Tigers. However, Valley (13-0) didn’t collapse and scored 21 unanswered points to beat Ankeny 21-14 and advance to the 4-A state championship game for the first time since 2005. Next week Valley will play Cedar Falls for the state title. Click here for a game story.

The magical season for Aplington-Parkersburg came to a close Friday night, two wins short of the Falcons’ goal of a state championship. The Falcons, who have been the darlings of Iowa football since a tornado devasted the community last spring, lost their first game of the season Friday night in the Class 1-A quarterfinals. A-P lost to third-seeded Emmetsburg 14-6. Click here for a game story.

Iowa High School Football Playoffs

October 26, 2008

By Jeff Fisher
The High School Football Huddle

The Iowa high school football postseason gets underway Wednesday night with the substate round. In 4A, defending champ Bettendorf (9-0) will be looking for the school’s 8th state championship. The Bulldogs figure to be able to make it to the state title game with a possible match-up against West Des Moines Valley (9-0). WDM Valley is ranked #1 by the Des Moines Register, Bettendorf is #2. Iowa City High is the only other undefeated 4-A team, and would face Bettendorf in the state semis.

In 3-A, 2007 runner-up Bishop Heelan of Sioux City would seem to have the inside track to be celebrating a championship in the University of Northern Iowa Dome next month. In 2-A, defending champ Solon seems to be the team to beat. Defending champ St. Albert is probably the class of 1-A, but don’t forget the feel good Aplington-Parkersburg, which was a perfect 9-0 this year after a tornado devastated the community earlier this year.
