Geneva became the first Illinois school to punch its ticket to the state football championships next week in Champaign. Friday night Geneva behind three second-half touchdowns from Michael Ratay beat Crystal Lake South 25-21 to earn at berth in the 7A championship game. Ratay’s three scores leaves him one TD shy of the single-season touchdown record of Billy Greenwald of Highland set back in 1989. Geneva will play the winner of Saturday’s game between Glenbard West and East St. Louis. Click here for game recap story.

Four weeks into the season the Mt. Carmel Caravan had been through quite a few highs and lows. After wins over Curie and St. Ignatius, MC found itself nationally-ranked by several polls. That lofty feeling came to a crashing halt in Week 3 with a three-point loss to Providence and was followed-up with a loss to St. Rita the next week.

At 2-2, the team did a gut check and now the Caravan is just two wins away from another state title after a 42-7 win over Marist Friday night in the Illinois 8A quarterfinals. Click here for a game story.

As the 2008 high school football season in Illinois opens this weekend, it looks like the the Mt. Carmel Caravan could be the Kings of the HIll when all is said and done. The Sun-Times has ranked head coach Frank Lenti’s team #1 in its pre-season Top 25 Poll thanks to the return of three Division 1 players from last year’s squad that lost to Glenbard North 28-21 in the 8A state semifinals.

Leading the way for the Caravan this year with by quarterback Jordan Lynch, who’s verbally committed to Northern Illinois, senior defensive lineman Anthony Battle, who given his word to Northwestern and linebacker Dimitrius Carr, who’s heading to Indiana.

Mt. Carmel gets things kicked-off on Saturday at Soldier Field when it faces Chicago Public League foe Curie in the first game of a tripleheader.
